If you go to Target, Home Depot or any of the other big chains that sell the Toro Electric Shovel you will probably find the same thing that I did…that it is SOLD OUT. Why? Because this is one of the most helpful tools to have ever been placed on the market.

It works fairly well on small driveways; don’t forget to pick up a nice long outdoor-use electric extension cord. And use this only on paved surfaces…no loose gravel!

But the real benefit of this tool comes with walkways and DECKS.

If you’ve got a large driveway, pass on this and go for something with a little more power. If you’ve got a decent size walkway, you’ll love this. It clears the snow with ease and it will last forever; my father-in-law has had his since the early 90s.

If you have a deck with a railing, and your deck isn’t covered so it builds up with snow, the Toro Electric Shovel will become your best winter friend. The snow is propelled a good 25 feet and easily clears deck railings. Just don’t shoot the snow into the wind (duh). No more throwing out your back from lifting heavy snow over railings with this baby.

No matter where you use this…a word of advice: Try not to let the snow get deeper than about 6″. Yes, that means you might have to go out a couple of times. But c’mon…it’s fun! The Toro still works in deep snow, but it really isn’t designed for it. Any deeper than about 6″ and you’ll need to “shave the top of the snow accumulation,” and you might as well not have the electric shovel for the effort that takes.

This saw also comes with a tall sliding fence that support crown molding vertically and easily slides out of the way for bevel cuts. Its arbor size is 5/8 inches. The DW713 weighs 35 pounds and is compatible with the DW7187 adjustable laser system. Backed by a manufacturer’s 3-year warranty, this saw comes with a built-in carrying handle for increased portability.

Overall quality is impressive. I especially like the cam miter lock, miter scale quality, detent over-ride, vernier miter adjustment, blade brake, light weight, and powerful 15A motor. The included blade (40 tooth) is surprisingly good. The only con I found was the bevel pointer/bevel scale setup. The “point” doesn’t line up with the bevel degree marker area by about 1/4 to 3/8’s half inch. It makes you guess the degree of bevel + or – 3 degrees. The manual says to set the top edge of the bevel pointer as the read point for accuracy. The only problem is that the top edge of the bevel pointer is not on the same plane as the bevel scale, leaving you without a good point to read the bevel. This is a 10 cent part, which is not in keeping with the quality and features of the rest of the saw. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

I received this saw as a Christmas present in 2007. I’ve used it nearly every other weekend since, and the only complaint I have is with the manual. This was my first miter saw so I wanted to be sure that it was put together correctly, but the instructions were nearly incomprehensible. But, since I’m a guy and am used to not reading directions (j/k) I figured it out eventually.

This saw is very powerful relative to other models in this price range. I had looked at the Dewalt saws, but didn’t really think the quality of construction was the same since Black & Decker bought them out a few years back. I’ve used this to cut 4×4″ treated posts and it slices through them like a hot knife through butter, with no motor lag at all. The sawdust catch-bag is a nice feature, but doesn’t catch it all. I wasn’t expecting it to, and having ANY of it get caught is a plus, and simply less clean up for me once the project is finished.

After receiving this saw, I did some research and found out that all Hitachi power tools have a 5 year limited warrantee. I’ve blown through 3 drills – 1 Skil, 2 Black & Deckers (guess I didn’t learn) – on my trip to the Hitachi brand, and will never buy anything but Hitachi tools from here on out. I would recommend this tool to anyone that is looking for a professional quality tool at a decent price.

I purchased this saw today after weeks of shopping around. It seems that all of the contractors I spoke with have the 8 inch Hitachi slider and swear by it. I was looking for a bit more capacity but with the same reliability, accuracy and the advantage of a laser guide. This saw is extremely well made and accurate out of the box. While it has a bit more plastic than it’s 8″ counterpart it is still made like a tank at less weight than the competition(44lbs I believe). The slide, bevel and miter functions are all smooth and the preset angles are easy to set but not to stiff that they don’t allow you to set angles close to the presets without accidentally “clicking” into them when tightenned. The fence seems to be improved over previous models and is a bit higher. It will also flip out for longer workpieces. As for the laser guide, I was skeptical of their accuacy but I couldn’t be more wrong. It was dead on out of the box and easily adustable depending on you personal preferences. Some people seem to have complained that the laser line disappears as soon as the blade is lowered, but it is so accurate that it doesn’t matter. Once you match your laser to your line, there is no need to follow it through the actual cut.

On the back side of plywood, we had zero tearout. When we cut a length of 8/4 oak, it felt like a hot knife through butter, and the result was too good to be believed: smooth as glass, completely free of circle marks of any kind, and it looked like it had been sanded already – cut after cut after cut.
